Street Magic: Building a crowd

Here it is: my secret formula for building a crowd. No theories or suggestions, I'm going to provide a step-by-step blue-print to build your own crowd. And not just any crowd, a crowd of people that will be ready able and willing to tip you at the end.

One simple line: "you wanna see a trick too, sure I got one you'll like, come on over.".

Works like this - you stop the first person and you are showing him a magic trick. While doing so, somebody will walk by and notice that someone is watching and start to watch also (or at least slow down). As soon as you are done, you look directly at them and say "you wanna see a trick too, sure I got one you'll like, come on over" and then start doing another trick.

You can even walk away from the first person, give him the chance to escape if he wants to - if he doesn't want to stay, it is because he doesn't want to tip you so do yourself a favor and let him leave now.

It doesn't matter, because while you are showing person two a trick someone else will walk by and notice hat someone is watching and start to watch also (or at least slow down). As soon as you are done showing person two the trick, look directly at person three and say the line again.

Let's assume person two stays ... so now you have two people watching. And while you are showing #3 a trick, someone else will walk by ... if people aren't walking, then it is just too slow of a time or location to work. You can either do longer tricks, work the trickle instead of a crowd, or take a break till it picks up.

As you keep doing this over and over, you will eventually get a crowd - a crowd being defined as a group of three or more strangers acting as a single entity. That is when you want to do your big money making trick, be it cups-and-balls, straight jacket escape, whatever. This is where you start your show.

Notice I said "groups", not individuals. So when I say a person walks by, I'm actually referring to a group of people. Start thinking of groups as individuals, as the crowd is a single entity - not just a group of people.

It works anywhere and everywhere. It doesn't matter what tricks you do, as long as you know at least three tricks you can draw a crowd. I'd suggest at least five.

Don't make the mistake of letting them say "no", you are NOT asking them if they want to see a trick - you are TELLING them they want to see a trick!

Delivered correctly, it gives people a warm fuzzy feeling that you are going to show them something they will like.

Of course another way is to change 10 one's into 10 ten's. LOL

LOL - yes Ed, changing one's into ten's works. I've actually tried that pitch, I don't have as much success with it as you do.

That is actually your "definition" of a crowd - I knew you had the knowledge I wanted. A very important piece to the puzzle.

One must know what a crowd is before one can build one. :)

I find being flamboyant (in voice and gesture) and having a huge red parrot helps a lot too! :)

He's short, He's fat, He's bald - and INCREDIBLY handsome . . .

Hey joe joe,

I'm glad you created this forum...

I'm looking for your blueprint video of how you build a crowd as you mentioned in your intro YouTube video, talking about building a crowd.

I have observed that if you can get a kid to stop and watch you (that is if their parents allow them) a lot of the time the crowd builds rather quickly.

Part 2 is not ready yet, my first gig of the year is in two weeks and don't plan on doing any magic thinking until then. Realistically, don't expect anything until at least summer.

The next thing on my list is to release the rest of the Super Spinner DVD, then I'll decide what to do next. :)
